We are currently in the process of renewing our transport fleet with more efficient vehicles with lowered emissions. This will also bring us up-to-date with current low-emission zone regulations form Transport for London that came into force this year.
We are constantly consolidating vehicle movements and deliveries across our sites and our customer delivery points.
Currently we are looking to improve the pool vehicle usage and reducing ‘own vehicle’ usage to zero. |
We continually strive to reuse, reduce and recycle packaging materials across all sites.
An example of this is using plastic skids in place of wooden ones that attach to the base of large cardboard boxes we despatch for seat, spares and ground support equipment. The reduction in weight alone justified their usage being at least 70% lighter than the equivalent amount of wood previously used. They do not need cutting to length, making a saving on labour and eliminating wood waste. They also save warehouse space as they stack inside each other, so several hundred can be stored on one pallet.

These were first used on helicopter boxes and save around £180 in freight charges for a batch of seats to the US. We now Free Issue these skids to our helicopter box supplier, who staples them on and delivers back a fully assembled box ready to receive two seats with a packing time of minutes.
We have also encouraged the use of these skids at Martin-Baker America, who now send boxes to Denham, so not only do they have the same savings but we can reuse the boxes as well.
These skids were originally designed as part of a kit using a baseboard to form an automated pallet system for production lines by IKEA. |
They are ergonomically and environmentally friendly being ultra-light, easy to handle and made of 100% recyclable high quality polypropylene.

As part of the Company’s environmental activities, the approach taken by the many suppliers to Martin-Baker is monitored and reported through the Company’s Environmental Steering Group. Whilst this task is currently associated with profiling our suppliers against ISO14001 and their engagement with ‘green’ activities, in the near future, having an active and auditable environmentally based approach will become a major part of the Company’s selection criteria.
